US Maritime Reporter

The US maritime reporter at IHS Jane’s will research and write news articles and features for publication online and in Jane’s hardcopy titles, primarily Jane’s Navy International and Jane’s Defence Weekly. Articles will inform readers of developments affecting or concerning the US Navy, US Coast Guard and US-based naval shipbuilders and other defence contractors. Areas of interest include equipment procurement programmes, policy and doctrine, operations and training, and budgets.

Roles and Responsibilities: Keep abreast of developments affecting or concerning the USN and USCG (as above). Build and maintain a list of contacts within the USN, USCG, associated government agencies and maritime defence industry. Attend media briefings, conferences, exhibitions and other relevant events. Research and write two news stories per day and six 5,000-word feature articles per year, providing images as appropriate. Provide ideas for future news and feature coverage. Liaise closely with the editor of Jane’s Navy International.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism preferred or equivalent professional experience.

Required Experience: At least two years experience as a reporter, with a proven track record in producing well-written, accurate and timely news articles and features for newspapers, magazines and/or online, ideally with a defence or other technical focus.

Other skills: IHS Jane’s is seeking a self-starting, highly-motivated candidate with the ability to dig out exclusives with minimal direction from head office.
